What is Inlay-Onlay and how is it used?

Inlay is a dental procedure in which the dentist takes a small amount of healthy tooth structure from the patient’s mouth and uses it to fill or close an area of missing tooth structure. Onlay, on the other hand, is an indirect procedure that does not require the removal of any healthy dental tissue, unlike inlays. In this procedure, the dentist places a composite filling or porcelain veneer over a tooth that has been weakened by caries or trauma. In the inlay, the dentist removes some healthy tooth structures to create a larger cavity. The dentist then uses a small amount of this tissue to fill or cover the missing tooth structure. The technician pierces the patient’s healthy teeth and surrounding gingival tissue to remove a predetermined amount of enamel from both surfaces. The remaining space is filled with tooth-colored composite resin that matches the color of natural teeth.

Inlay or Onlay? Which is better for my teeth?

Inlay and Onlay are a type of infill. The purpose of both procedures is to restore a tooth that has been damaged by caries or injury. Fillings are made of composite or amalgam materials and are placed in the tooth to close gaps in the tooth structure. The material used in the fillers depends on what type of filler is needed; Composite fillings can be used to repair small cavities, while amalgam fillings are mostly used to repair large cavities. The second most common procedure is the crown, also known as a veneer. This process replaces all or part of the natural tooth with an artificial material such as porcelain, metal alloys, or composite resin materials. There are two types of crown veneers: partial veneer and full veneer. Partial veneers cover only the surface of the tooth, while full veneers cover the entire tooth. Crowns can be made from natural materials such as porcelain or metal alloys and can also be made with composite resin materials. Inlay or Onlay? What are the benefits of Inlay and Onlay?

Inlay and Onlay processes have a number of benefits:

    • Inlay and Onlay provide additional strength to the tooth and thus increase the chewing pressure of the tooth.
    • Inlay and Onlay can last longer than conventional fillings with proper oral care.
    • During inlay and Onlay procedures, less enamel is removed compared to the traditional fillings, thus preserving the excess of your natural teeth.
    • Inlays and Onlays are designed to match the natural tooth color of the patient.
    • Both dental procedures can be completed in a single session.
    • Inlay and Onlay processes can be used to correct a failed dental filling.
