What is tooth extraction?
An extraction removes a tooth from its socket. It may be recommended because of disease, damage or crowding, after the dentist considers the available options.
Before your appointment
Tell your dentist about medicines and health conditions. Eating and drinking instructions depend on the planned anaesthesia or sedation. Do not follow a general six-hour fasting rule: obtain and follow the instructions for your own appointment.
Procedure and aftercare
Simple extraction and surgical extraction are different approaches. Some cases need an incision, removal of a small amount of bone or sectioning of the tooth. Your dentist explains what is planned. After extraction, follow the advice about protecting the blood clot, cleaning, diet and medicines. Contact the treating team if bleeding, pain or swelling concerns you.
